At Edge Osteopathy, we regularly support families navigating tongue tie. Feeding challenges in the early weeks can feel overwhelming, and a diagnosis of tongue tie often brings new questions. Whether you are preparing for a tongue tie release or navigating the period afterwards, Edge Osteopathy offers gentle paediatric osteopathy to support your baby during this transition.
What is a Tongue tie?
A tongue tie occurs when the frenulum (the small band of tissue under the tongue) is tight, short or restrictive, which may limit tongue movement. Some babies with tongue tie experience feeding challenges.
How can we support babies around tongue tie release?
Babies with restricted tongue movement may develop compensatory patterns involving the jaw, neck or body as they adapt to feeding.
Pre-release paediatric osteopathy focuses on:
Supporting relaxed movement
Encouraging overall comfort
Assessing jaw, neck and body mobility.
Research into tongue tie release suggests that while the procedure changes the physical restriction under the tongue, babies may still need time to adapt to their new range of movement and it can be very normal for babies to take a few weeks to build up strength and control of their tongue.
Many tongue tie practitioners and lactation consultants recommend gentle oral exercises after release. At Edge Osteopathy, we also provide gentle, hands-on treatment focused on the jaw, neck, and surrounding tissues to support relaxed movement and overall comfort while babies adjust.
The early weeks with a baby can feel intense, especially when feeding feels uncertain. At Edge Osteopathy, appointments are unhurried and baby-led, giving you space to ask questions and feel heard. Whether you are preparing for a tongue tie release or navigating the period afterwards, our aim is to provide calm support for both you and your baby.
